Michael Polk Opens Up About Life After Corporate Retirement

Retirement did not stick for Michael Polk Newell Brands. Just a few years after stepping away from public company leadership, the former Newell Brands chief executive returned to work in 2019, taking the top job at Implus, a smaller company backed by private equity. The move gave him a fresh perspective on what it really takes to lead.

Lessons From a Long Career

Over more than 40 years, Polk held leadership positions at Kraft, Unilever, and Newell Brands, giving him deep exposure to the demands of public company management. He describes that world as one centered on delegation, where CEOs allocate resources against a company’s broader plan and often lead through other people rather than doing the work themselves. Investor relations played a major role too. Polk says he devoted roughly thirty percent of his time to investors and public markets, all while balancing short term earnings pressure with longer term goals.

Finding Purpose at Implus

At Implus, Michael Polk found himself doing far more hands-on work than he had in years. He is directly involved with the marketing team and helps design selling systems and go-to-market programs alongside the commercial group, calling it “a back-to-the-future experience.” He also notes that his newer colleagues, while hungry and competitive, tend to be younger and less experienced, meaning he has had to actively model the behaviors he wants them to adopt.

Private ownership, Polk says, brings a different kind of pressure than public markets. Owners are generally more focused on long term development than quarterly results, giving leadership room to make bolder bets with potentially bigger rewards.

Despite the differences between his old and new roles, Polk believes some leadership principles hold steady no matter the company. Accessibility, authenticity, and sharp decision making remain essential, he says. For Michael Polk, coming out of retirement turned out to be less about slowing down and more about rediscovering the work he loves. Read this article for more information.
