Hart Energy Honors Kelcy Warren in 2023 Hall of Fame
Hart Energy marked its 50th anniversary in 2023 with a Hall of Fame series recognizing industry pioneers and the leaders guiding energy into its next chapter. Kelcy Warren, co-founder and executive chairman of Energy Transfer, earned a place on that list for building a pipeline empire in under 30 years.
The profile, written by editorial director Jordan Blum, describes a company that keeps getting bigger with each new transaction.
Humble Beginnings
Warren’s story starts in Gladewater and White Oak, rural East Texas towns where he was born and raised. His father spent a career as a pipeline field hand at Sunoco. After graduating from the University of Texas at Arlington, Warren went to work at Lone Star Gas Co., then moved on to Endevco.
At Endevco he met investors Ray C. Davis and Ben Cook. The trio bought the struggling company, rebranded it and sold it at a profit. They used much of that money in 1996 to found Energy Transfer with about 200 miles of natural gas pipelines.
Two Waves of Deals
Hart Energy identifies two major acquisition waves behind the company’s growth. The first followed Enron’s collapse, which pushed many pipeline assets onto the market. “Enron was a gift from God,” Kelcy Warren said. The second came more recently, when Energy Transfer helped consolidate the midstream sector amid rising demand for crude oil and LNG export capacity.
Organic growth played a part too. The Dakota Access Pipeline is among the best-known projects, and the company also built a large amount of fractionation capacity.
The most personal milestone came in 2012 with the $5.3 billion Sunoco deal. Warren said he wished his father, who died in 1992, could have witnessed it.
Recent purchases include Enable Midstream, Lotus Midstream and Crestwood Equity Partners. Kelcy Warren told Hart Energy he wants to grow further across the Americas and into LNG and petrochemicals. His view of the work stays grounded: “If you’re a good pipeliner, you’ll never have the perfect system.” Refer to this article for related information.
