Kelcy Warren on Pipelines, Spreads, and the Art of Midstream
Most people think about energy in terms of drillingwho finds the oil, who takes the risk, who strikes it rich. Kelcy Warren thinks in terms of what happens after the well comes in. Where does the crude go? How does the gas get from the wellhead to a market that can actually use it? Who builds the infrastructure that turns geological abundance into economic value?
Those questions have guided Kelcy Warren’s career since he co-founded Energy Transfer with Ray Davis in 1996. Today, that company operates nearly 125,000 miles of pipeline and moves roughly one-third of all natural gas and crude oil produced in the United States. Kelcy Warren has said that without infrastructure in the right places, pointing in the right directions, there is no market.
The Two Ways to Make Money
Warren has a straightforward theory about how pipelines generate returns. “A pipeliner makes money two ways: on volume, which is very important, or spreads,” he has explained. Volume refers to throughput how much product moves through the pipe. Spreads refer to price differentials between production regions and consumption markets. A barrel of crude worth one price in Midland, Texas is worth more at a Gulf Coast export terminal. Owning the pipe that moves it captures that difference.
This dual-revenue logic shaped Energy Transfer’s expansion strategy. The company positioned assets at key arbitrage points Cushing, the Gulf Coast, Appalachia to capture both high-volume flows and geographic price spreads. The 2023 Lotus Midstream acquisition, for example, gave Energy Transfer the Cushing-to-Gulf Coast link Warren had long sought for exactly this reason.
Warren also speaks plainly about competitive posture: “Most of our industry lives by fear. We’ve just not been afraid of anything.” That confidence has drawn criticism from analysts skeptical of large acquisitions.
