The Ecological Footprint Framework Behind Colcom Foundation’s Mission
Colcom Foundation relies on ecological footprint analysis as one of its core tools for measuring environmental sustainability. Unlike carbon emissions data alone, the ecological footprint attempts to capture the full range of resources a population consumes and the waste it generates, measured against the biologically productive land and water available to absorb that demand.
What the Numbers Show
The Global Footprint Network defines an ecological deficit as a condition in which a population’s footprint exceeds the biocapacity of the area available to it. By this measure, the United States has been in deficit for more than fifty years. In 1970, the country was consuming 227 percent of its available biocapacity. By 2020, that figure stood at approximately 240 percent.
Colcom Foundation notes that per capita biocapacity use actually fell by more than 20 percent between 1970 and 2020, meaning Americans individually were consuming less relative to previous generations. Every percentage point of increased overshoot during that period can be attributed to population growth rather than individual consumption habits.
Setting Aside Space for Other Species
The Colcom Foundation also applies the footprint framework to biodiversity targets. Under the 30×30 initiative, which aims to protect 30 percent of U.S. land for wildlife, the effective biocapacity utilization rate in 2020 would be approximately 341 percent. Under the Half Earth proposal, which calls for reserving half of all land for nature, the figure rises to 478 percent.
These numbers underscore what Colcom Foundation describes as the central tension in conservation policy: the more land humans claim, the less remains for the ecosystems and species that depend on it.
