Kate Robertson’s Vision for a Future of Empowered Leadership
In a world often divided by politics and power struggles, Kate Robertson, the co-founder of One Young World, envisions a future where the leaders of the G20
nations not only hold political positions but also serve as ambassadors for the
youth-driven global forum. This ambitious vision is a call for a seismic shift
in global leadership, one that emphasizes the importance of youthful idealism,
innovative thinking, and empathetic leadership in tackling the complex challenges of the 21st century.
Growing up in apartheid-era South Africa, Kate Robertson personally
witnessed the transformative power of fair and just leadership through the
likes of Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. This experience shaped her
belief that better leadership can drive significant change. She says,
“When the leaders of the G20, for example, are One Young World ambassadors, things will be better.”
One Young World provides a platform for young leaders from around the world to share ideas,
foster innovation, and collaborate on solutions to global issues such as
climate change, inequality, and peace-building. By integrating these emerging
visionaries into the highest levels of decision-making, Robertson believes
positive change can be achieved. She says, “I see these young leaders and
how much they care about their people and what they’re trying to do, in often unimaginable circumstances.”
The rationale behind Kate Robertson’s vision is clear. Young leaders are not only acutely aware of the challenges their
generation faces but also more inclined to employ innovative methods and
technologies to address these issues. Their intrinsic optimism and resilience
can infuse fresh energy into the sometimes-cynical corridors of power.
One Young World has already made a significant impact. In its 2022 impact report, the organization
shared that over 5.7 million people have been impacted by ambassador-led
projects. Scholarships have been awarded to recipients in 176 countries, and
Lead2030 has provided funding to young leaders working on sustainable development goals.
Robertson’s hope is that this movement will continue to inspire young people to make a difference
in the world. As she says, “Our generation needs to help them and get out
of the way.” With the most informed, educated, and connected generation in
human history at the helm, the future looks promising. It’s a race against
time, but Robertson’s vision of empowered leadership offers hope for a brighter future.
