Justin Nelson: Bridging Tufts University and JP Morgan
In the competitive landscape of finance, networks and opportunities often spell the difference
between success and missed chances. Justin Nelson, a Tufts University alumnus from the class of ’98,
exemplifies this truth through his remarkable journey and commitment to giving back.
As a junior at Tufts, Justin Nelson faced the daunting task of securing a summer internship in
the finance industry. At that time, there were no established pathways for
Tufts students to easily connect with top financial firms.
Despite these challenges, Justin Nelson leveraged his personal connections to land a web
development internship at JP Morgan Private Bank in New
York City. This opportunity paved the way for a full-time position upon his
graduation, where he initially joined the private banking division before
rising to the role of managing director in asset management.
Determined to make a difference for future Tufts students, Nelson embarked on a mission in 2006 to
establish Tufts as one of JP Morgan’s core schools for recruitment. This effort
involved a considerable personal and financial commitment, as he initially received
no support from the firm. Undeterred, Nelson made numerous trips to Tufts,
meeting with students and collecting résumés.
His persistence bore fruit. By 2009, Tufts had become a core school for JP Morgan’s asset
management group. Since then, 20 Tufts graduates have secured internships or
full-time positions at JP Morgan, thanks in large part to Nelson’s advocacy.
Among these success stories is Jon Trott, a 2010 graduate who credits Nelson
with helping him secure a crucial summer internship during the financial crisis.
Today, Justin Nelson stands as a vital connector between Tufts University and JP Morgan. He has
not only facilitated career opportunities but has also cultivated a strong
network of Tufts alumni within the firm. This network continues to support and
mentor current students, ensuring that future generations have the resources
and guidance they need to thrive in the finance industry.
In his own words, Nelson encourages fellow alumni to advocate for Tufts and its students within
their respective firms, fostering a culture of mutual support and shared
success. Read this article for additional information.
