Despite it’s rather humble beginnings in Oak Park, Illinois in the early 1900’s, the OSI Group has soared to become one of America’s top 100 food Companies. The OSI Group was founded in 1909 by a German immigrant named Otto Kolschowsky who immigrated to America in 1907. Although originally founded as a family-owned meat market, by 1917, OSI expanded into the wholesale meat market. It was in the wholesale meat market that OSI distinguished itself locally as a consistent provider of quality meat and quality service.
Although OSI provided quality meat and services, it remained a small local business until around 1955 when, as fate would have it, Otto and his two sons met Ray Kroc. Ray Kroc was the franchise agent for a California couple—Richard and Maurice McDonald—who had founded a family restaurant known all around the world today as McDonald’s. Before he opened the first McDonalds restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois, Ray Kroc entered into an agreement with OSI for OSI to be its supplier of fresh ground beef patties. This agreement proved to be a fateful one for OSI because the McDonalds restaurant franchise took off by leaps and bounds. Ray Kroc bought out the interest of Richard and Maurice McDonald and both McDonalds and OSI experienced exponential growth.
Today, the OSI Group has grown from a regional meat supplier to one of the largest food providers in the world. OSI operates over 65 facilities in 17 countries and continues to expand in size, services and food offerings. Many of the leading food brands in the world regard OSI as their global food provider including many western food chains such as Pizza Hut, Papa John’s, Subways and Burger King. OSI’s success for over a century is due to its commitment to its customer base which includes providing custom food solutions made to the customer’s precise specifications and its commitment to providing quality food. As a result of these commitments, in 2018, OSI was ranked #63 on the Forbes list of America’s Largest Private Companies with its yearly revenue of over $6.1 billion. In addition, in March 2019, Refrigerated & Frozen Foods Magazine listed OSI as the sixth largest Meat/Poultry/Seafood processor in its Top 150 Frozen Foods Processors Report. These and other accolades only reinforce the fact that OSI is committed to upholding its reputation as one of the largest food providers in the world.
